Reservation Quotas in IRCTC

A quota is a specified share of berths earmarked for a particular category of passengers, stations or booking purpose.

•  General Quota (GN): Available to all passengers without any special eligibility. It normally contains the largest share of berths.

•  Ladies Quota (LD): Earmarked mainly for women travelling alone or with children, subject to the prescribed conditions.

•  Lower Berth and Senior Citizen Quota (SS): Lower berths are earmarked for eligible senior citizens, women aged 45 years and above, and pregnant women, subject to availability.

•  Persons with Disability or Divyangjan Quota (HP): Reserved for eligible persons with disabilities and, where permitted, their escorts.

•  Duty Pass Quota (DP): Earmarked for serving Railway employees travelling on authorised Railway duty passes.

•  Tatkal Quota (CK): Intended for passengers requiring travel at short notice. Booking opens shortly before the journey and additional Tatkal charges apply.

•  Premium Tatkal Quota (PT): Available only on selected trains. Its fare increases dynamically according to demand, and concessions are generally not permitted.

•  Pooled Quota (PQ): A common quota shared by passengers travelling between specified intermediate stations.

•  Remote Location Quota (RL): Earmarked for important intermediate stations located away from the train's originating station.

•  Foreign Tourist Quota (FT): Earmarked for eligible foreign tourists, subject to identity-document and booking requirements.

•  Defence Quota (DF): Provided for eligible Defence personnel travelling on authorised warrants or other prescribed documents.

•  Parliament House Quota (PH): Earmarked for Members of Parliament and other eligible persons connected with Parliament.

•  Headquarters or High Official Quota (HO): A limited emergency quota controlled by designated Railway authorities for urgent official or exceptional travel requirements.

•  Yuva Quota (YU): Available on notified trains to eligible unemployed youth, subject to prescribed age and documentary conditions.

Important: The availability and number of berths under each quota vary according to the train, class, boarding station, journey date and Railway allotment.

मुख्यालय या उच्च अधिकारी कोटा (एचओ):तत्काल आधिकारिक या असाधारण यात्रा आवश्यकताओं के लिए नामित रेलवे अधिकारियों द्वारा नियंत्रित एक सीमित आपातकालीन कोटा।

युवा कोटा (वाईयू):निर्धारित आयु और दस्तावेजी शर्तों के अधीन, पात्र बेरोजगार युवाओं के लिए अधिसूचित ट्रेनों में यह सुविधा उपलब्ध है।

महत्वपूर्ण: प्रत्येक कोटे के अंतर्गत उपलब्ध बर्थों की संख्या और उपलब्धता ट्रेन, श्रेणी, बोर्डिंग स्टेशन, यात्रा की तिथि और रेलवे आवंटन के अनुसार भिन्न-भिन्न होती है।

The Story of Indian Railway Computerised Reservation

1. Story of Computerised Reservation 


Until the mid-1980s, reserved railway tickets in India were largely handled manually. Reservation staff worked with physical records and manually allotted seats and berths. The process was slow, especially at busy reservation offices, and passengers often had to depend on the reservation office connected with the relevant train or railway system.


Indian Railways decided to computerise this work. Computer Maintenance Corporation Limited (CMC), a Government of India public sector company at that time, worked with Indian Railways on the early Passenger Reservation System (PRS). A pilot system was developed in the mid-1980s. Reliable sources confirm that the first computerised PRS was commissioned at New Delhi in 1985; some later Government summaries describe the formal introduction as 1986. 


The early system used Digital Equipment Corporation VAX computers running the VMS operating system. The reservation software was written mainly in FORTRAN. The enhanced application became known as IMPRESS — Integrated Multi-train Passenger Reservation System.


The system was gradually expanded. Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai received computerised reservation facilities during 1987. Secunderabad was added later, around 1989. Thus, the five major PRS centres became New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Secunderabad.


There was still an important limitation. These centres initially worked as separate “islands”. Each centre had its own database and did not function as one fully integrated national reservation network. This restricted true “anywhere-to-anywhere” reservation.


The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), an organisation under the Ministry of Railways, then developed the next major generation of the system. The new application was called CONCERT — Country-wide Network for Computerised Enhanced Reservation and Ticketing.


CONCERT was introduced in stages from the 1990s. The Secunderabad system was among the earliest implementations in 1994. The other major PRS centres were progressively migrated. Interconnection of the five PRS nodes was completed in April 1999. This created the national network needed for “anywhere-to-anywhere” reserved ticket booking from PRS counters.


The network used the telecommunications available at that time, including leased communication lines and other Railway/telecom links. The important achievement was not a single dramatic “switch”, but the phased creation of a distributed, nationwide reservation system capable of handling reservations from multiple locations without double-allotting the same accommodation.

Internet booking came later. Indian Railways introduced internet-based reservation through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) in 2002. The first stage used the i-ticket model, in which a ticket booked online was physically delivered to the passenger. Full e-ticketing, where a passenger could travel using an electronic reservation record and prescribed identification, was introduced later in 2005.

IRCTC did not replace the core Passenger Reservation System. It provided an internet-facing booking channel connected to the Railway reservation infrastructure. CRIS continued to develop, implement and maintain the core PRS technology.

Today, the scale is much larger. CRIS states that the PRS serves more than 20.5 lakh booked passengers per day across multiple channels. A Railway Ministry release in July 2026 stated that the IRCTC website alone handles an average of about 14.5 lakh tickets per day.

इंटरनेट बुकिंग की सुविधा बाद में शुरू हुई।भारतीय रेलवे ने 2002 में इंडियन रेलवे कैटरिंग एंड टूरिज्म कॉर्पोरेशन (IRCTC) के माध्यम से इंटरनेट आधारित आरक्षण प्रणाली शुरू की।पहले चरण में आई-टिकट मॉडल का उपयोग किया गया, जिसमें ऑनलाइन बुक किया गया टिकट यात्री को भौतिक रूप से दिया जाता था। पूर्ण ई-टिकटिंग प्रणाली, जिसमें यात्री इलेक्ट्रॉनिक आरक्षण रिकॉर्ड और निर्धारित पहचान पत्र का उपयोग करके यात्रा कर सकता था, को बाद में 2005 में लागू किया गया।

Vertical Reservations

Reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and EWS is referred to as vertical reservation. It applies separately for each of the groups specified under the law. This is mentioned in Article 16(A) of the Indian Constitution.

Horizontal Reservations

It refers to the equal opportunity provided to other categories of beneficiaries such as women, individuals with disabilities and Ex Service men, cutting through the vertical categories. It comes under Article 15(3), 16(1) ,309 resp.of the Indian Constitution.
