Definition

• Gazetted Officer: A government employee whose appointment is published in the Gazette of India or a State Government Gazette.

• Non-Gazetted Officer: A government employee whose appointment is not published in the official gazette.

Key Differences

Aspect	Gazetted Officer	Non-Gazetted Officer
Authority & Powers	Can attest documents, verify identity, issue official certificates, perform functions where gazetted status is required.	Usually do not have such powers; perform duties under supervision or support roles.
Publication	Appointment/promotion is officially published in the Gazette.	Not published in the Gazette.
Grade / Recruitment	Generally higher grades (Group A, some Group B non-ministerial posts). Recruited via competitive exams, administrative services.	Lower grades (Group C, erstwhile Group D etc.). Recruitment may be less formal or via different processes.
